For years I have talked about how wonderful it would be to someday have a nice little window over the kitchen sink. In our apartment I had a little shelf and might have pretended there was a window there... *le sigh* One of the things I love about our new home is this gorgeous window over my sink. This photo was taken at my favorite time of the day, in the morning when the sun shines in. Dream come true.
I splurged on a few special things for the kitchen. The fabric used to sew the curtains is a gorgeous Moda print and I spent a good amount of time on the curtains. I wanted to make sure I did them right and took the time to properly line them. I also chose to do a tabbed top so they would gather really nicely. I purchased some coordinating Moda fabrics for throw pillows for the living room and curtains for our downstairs half bath to tie all the rooms together, but I have yet to tackle those projects. I splurged on a bunch of Le Creuset accessories too ~ a spoon rest, two utensil crocks, a butter dish and salt crock all in the beautiful Caribbean color. I wish they made a sugar and creamer set in this color!
The kitchen in our apartment was pretty small so I am very accustomed to working efficiently in a small space. Although the kitchen itself is quite large in the new house, there is a small work space that I am getting used to and managing. I am not sure what the solution is, but at some point we may have to invest in some sort of small portable wood/butcher block style island. We'll see. I am also utilizing the amazing shelf we had in our apartment for all my appliances, porcelain, pots and pans and other miscellaneous tools. It's awesome to have access to everything. Since it is right by the back door, which leads out onto the back deck and most importantly to the grill, we put some hooks on the side and hung all our grill tools. It's great to just grab them on your way out the door. I love the function of this shelving unit and I also like how it is more on the modern side.
I also love how all my cookbooks and cooking magazines are easily accessed, right next to the kitchen counter. I can sit at the kitchen table, thumb through my cookbooks and get cracking on something tasty.
Lastly, the kitchen wouldn't be the kitchen without a spot for Lily to "cook" while Mummy is cooking. Here is Lily's amazing modern kitchen. It makes us all very, very happy! :o)
Although, we are mostly settled, I'm still figuring out where things work best and I have been moving things around until I find the way things work best for us. The kitchen seems to be just right. And, as they say, it is the heart of the home and I love it here.
